Using Magnet Therapy For Better Health
When you think you've heard it all regarding alternative health products, think again. People are now using magnets for health therapy. Magnets? How can they help? The idea is that all life, animal and human, responds to the magnetic field of the earth. Proponents do not claim that magnet use alone cures or remedies anything, but they do believe that magnetic therapy improves the ability of the body to repair itself. Magnet therapy is not new but has been used for centuries, and the oldest known use was in Africa. Magnetite was mined, ground up and used in various potions, foods, and topical preparations. Ancient civilizations including Greeks, Arabs, Indians, Chinese, and Egyptians used magnets for health.
These days people employ magnet therapy primarily for arthritis and other types of chronic pain. There is a good selection of attractive magnetic jewelry on the market - bracelets, and necklaces being the most common. Your own can be created by taking the magnets to a jeweler to be drilled and beads or stones added to make a custom piece. People who wear magnetic jewelry claim that it helps immensely. There are physicians who sometimes use magnet therapy to aid in healing broken bones, but many believe that more research needs to be done to support the numerous claims made by users of magnets.
Mattress pads that have magnets incorporated into their design can be used by people who suffer from generalized pain. Those who use them claim that they help in chronic pain relief, insomnia, fatigue, and even allergies and respiratory problems. This has not been proven, but no harm can be done by trying them. A note of caution though, people with pacemakers or implanted insulin pumps should not use magnetic therapy. Expectant mothers also should avoid magnet use during pregnancy.
We all have probably seen or heard commercials for magnetic insoles. They claim to aid in foot, back, and knee problems. They are not extremely expensive, but would compare to orthotic inserts in price. The ads claim you will have boundless energy when wearing these insoles. OK, I admit it, I did try them. A free pair was sent to the office where I was working, and no one wanted them. I have a knee problem, so I figured I had nothing to lose. They were comfortable, but I did not experience a significant change in my pain. I know there are lots of people who say they help tremendously. I hope they do, but I can only testify of my own experience.
However, I have a brother and also a friend who have used magnet therapy for lower back and wrist pain with good results.
In conclusion, health magnets may have some benefits. You need to be the judge for your own circumstances. The good news is that there is no harm in trying it.
